Klodhopper

This is a nice top-water fly that would be easy to tie and uses easily obtained materials. Many top-water flies in the big size range work real well on Adirondack waters, both moving and still, during the summer months. Whether the fish see it as a hopper or stonefly it doesn’t matter to me. They like this one and for the angler it is easy to tie on and see once it is in the water. Change the colors of the materials and try them out.

Pattern Recipe & Tying Instructions

Hook: 2x long size 6-10 dry
Thread: 3/0 brown or to match foam
Tail: none
Rib: none
Body:  1/8th” thick foam - original color is brown, but get creative and try others like black, yellow or olive
Over Body: Tan Dubbing
Hackle: Brown rooster
Wing: Elk Hair
Legs: Red Rubber
Tying Notes:
Cut a strip of foam equal to the width of gap of the hook and tie it in just behind the eye. It should extend over the eye and bend of the hook once tied in by about one inch on each end.

Wrap the thread to the bend of the hook and as the thread covers up the foam over the shank it will create air pockets in the foam aiding in floatation.

Cut the foam extending past the bend of the hook into a v shape.

Tie in the hackle and dub the body about 2/3rd’s of the way to the hook eye.

Palmer the hackle to the point where the dubbing ends.

Now, where the dubbing ends tie in an elk hair wing extending to the end of the foam that extends slightly past the bend of the hook.

Tie in the legs in an “x” fashion. Legs should be shorter in front that the rear legs.

The foam that extended over the eye of the hook should be folded back over the body and tied down. Whip finish and fish. Best of luck.
