May General Meeting - Nymphing Tricks with Loren Williams
Albany, NY
The
May
2012
Meeting of Clearwater Chapter of Trout Unlimited will be held on
May
21st at 7:30 PM at the Best Western Sovereign Hotel in Albany about one
mile east from end of the Northway (I-87). Guest speaker will be
Loren Williams from the USA
Fly Fishing Team with a presentation on Nymphing Tricks. The
guest
fly tier, Dick Hermida, will be starting at 6:30 PM. Be sure to take
part in the monthly fly swap. Admission to our
meetings is free and public is always invited.
About the
speaker, Loren Williams:
Loren is
a long-standing member of Fly-Fishing Team USA and the current head
coach of the US Youth Fly-Fishing team. Loren’s interest in FIPS-Mouche
governed competitive fly-fishing started in the summer of 2005 when he
was selected to represent the USA as Fly Fishing Team USA’s first
official fly tier. That year he accompanied the team to the 2005
FIPS-Mouche World Fly-Fishing Championships in Lycksele, Sweden - his
first exposure to competition fly-fishing. Ever since that event, due
to the positive experience in Sweden, the teammates he met, and the
knowledge he gained, Loren has dedicated every moment of his free time
to learning the nuances of competitive fly-fishing. Not only has this
rekindled his passion for the sport, he has become a better angler and,
therefore, a better teacher. |

Hudson River Estuary Program
WAVE
(Wadeable Assessments by
Volunteer Evaluators)
(NYS DEC flyer in pdf format)
How healthy is your stream?
Help NYS DEC find out!
Become a Citizen Monitor for WAVE
1. Find a stream you would like to visit.
2. Register for a 4 hour training:
www.surveymonkey.com/s/Project-WAVE
What is WAVE This simple assessment can be performed by most everyone.
- Visit streams during July – Oct.
- Collect and identify stream organisms
- Preserve one example for each organism for identification by the WAVE
Coordinator
If you find four or more of our “Most Wanted” organisms, the NYS DEC
will consider that a
healthy stream. If you only find “Least Wanted” organisms, the
stream will be flagged for further investigation.
How WAVE helps NYS DEC investigation.
- WAVE data will be included in
federal and state water
quality reports.
- WAVE data will also be used to
target NYS DEC assessments and local restoration efforts to where
they are most needed.

September 19th, 2011
Chapter General Meeting, Albany, NY
The September Meeting of
Clearwater Chapter of Trout Unlimited was held on September 19th with guest speaker, Joe Goodspeed, from the Cortland Line Company,
who presented a talk on 'Tailwater Nymphing Tricks.'
"Tailwater Nymphing Tricks" was a conversation on fishing
pressure and how it affects selectivity and
changes behavior of Wild Trout. Energy expenditure theory, stomach
samples, pattern selection, rigging techniques for the entire water
column and nymphing gear were addressed.

Joe Goodspeed is currently the fly line and product design coordinator
for Cortland Line Co. He cut his teeth fly fishing on western tailwaters,
spending more than 365 days on Rocky Mountain tailwaters by
age 21 thanks to his father's generous summer camping vacations.
Formerly a diehard dry fly angler, Joe now spends far more time nymphing
- about 225 days or partial days on the water right at current count,
with the vast majority of that time spent chasing Trout, Steelhead and
Atlantic Salmon. |

Support
Casting for Recovery's belief in "To Fish is to Hope"
Please donate or volunteer your time for this very important cause.
Casting for Recovery® (CFR), founded in 1996, is a national non-profit support and educational program for breast cancer survivors. We enhance the lives of breast cancer survivors by offering no-cost retreats tailored to promote and support mental and physical healing through shared experiences and the learning of new skills. At the end of 2008 we have served 3,500 women through the delivery of 269 retreats, helped by over 1,000 volunteers nationwide.
Through 2˝-day retreats, the sport of fly-fishing is used to promote physical, emotional, and spiritual healing. The effective balance between the physical benefits of the gentle exercise provided by fly-fishing and the counseling curriculum benefits women at any age and any stage of treatment or recovery. The program allows women to get away from their cancer, while providing support from the medical/psychosocial professionals present at every retreat.
